DALLAS – Missouri State led a 7-3 lead sixth-inning lead slip away in Sunday's Missouri Valley Conference series finale at Horner Ballpark as 24th-ranked Dallas Baptist scored 14 unanswered runs to earn a 17-7 victory.
The Bears (14-13, 0-3 MVC) were held off the scoreboard until a four-run fifth, with a
Walker Jenkins RBI single, two-run double from
Mason Greer and RBI ground out from
Drake Baldwin making it a 4-2 lead.
DBU (21-10, 3-0) got one back in bottom of the fifth before the bottom of the Bears' order sparked a three-run sixth, with
Drew Townsend driving in
Grant Wood with a double and scoring on a Jenkins single. Jenkins then stole second and scored on a
Spencer Nivens single as the MSU freshman extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Patriots scored in each of their next two at bats to close the gap to 7-6 before the floodgates opened in the eighth. DBU's Cole Moore provided the go-ahead single early on, and Ryan Wrobleski's second homer of the game was the final blow that enacted the run-rule victory.
Townsend went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Jenkins added two hits and drove in a pair to pace MSU's 10-hit day. Starter
Forrest Barnes yielded five runs in five innings in the no-decision.
Missouri State returns home Tuesday, April 12 for a 6:30 p.m. game with Oral Roberts (17-12) at Hammons Field. The Golden Eagles defeated the Bears 6-5 on April 12 in Tulsa.
