FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Missouri State softball fell to 4-11 on the year with a couple of losses as the Bears closed out their final day at the Razorback Rumble in Fayetteville. MSU lost a close game, 3-2, to Kansas City (4-13) in the first game of the day, followed by an 11-3 five-inning loss to No. 10/11 Arkansas (13-4) to finish up the tournament.
Offensively, the Bears were paced by
Skyler Shaw who went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI across both games.
Madison Hunsaker and
Alex Boze both hit .333 on the afternoon, while Hunsaker also led the Bears in the circle giving up two earned runs in a team high four innings pitched on the final day of the Arkansas tournament.
With a single in the top of the fifth inning against the Razorbacks,
Daphne Plummer recorded the 200th hit of her career.
In the first game of the day, Missouri State started the scoring early with two runs in the first inning of their rematch against Kansas City. Following a Boze walk,
Olivia Krehbiel launched her first home run of the year, a two-run shot, to center field to put MSU up 2-0 in the top of the first.
The Roos answered quickly in the home half of the first inning, taking advantage of a walk and a double before scoring their first run on a wild pitch.
Missouri State held on to its one-run lead until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Kansas City was able to capitalize on a leadoff walk, then sending a triple to right center field to tie the game at 2-2. Two batters later, the Roos were able to bring their runner on third home with a two-out single to give Kansas City its first lead of the day. Ultimately, that would be all Kansas City would need, as MSU wasn't able to push a run across in the sixth or seventh innings and fell 3-2.
In game two, the Bears once again hopped on the board first, this time against No. 10/11 Arkansas. With two outs on the board early, Boze returned to her home run hitting ways, sending a solo shot to left center field to put MSU up 1-0 after the first half inning.
Arkansas returned the favor immediately in the home half of the first, knocking a leadoff base hit and scoring on another single three batters later to tie the game at one run each.
Hunsaker got things rolling in the second inning with a leadoff single to right field before advancing to second base on a Shaw sacrifice bunt. A batter later, freshman
Kenzie Derryberry reached on an error by the Razorback shortstop that allowed Hunsaker to score, putting MSU back in front, 2-1.
However, the home half of the second inning would serve as the turning point in the game. Arkansas was able to push across seven runs on six hits in the inning, which consisted of three home runs, a couple of doubles and a single that put the Razorbacks up 8-2 after two innings.
After a quiet third inning on both sides, MSU responded with a run in the top half of the fourth. Hunsaker once again led off an inning with a hit, this time a double that Shaw followed up with a single two batters later to score pinch runner
Annie Mueller and cut the Bear deficit to five runs.
Unfortunately, the potent Razorback offense was able to score two runs in the fourth and a single run in the home half of the fifth to defeat MSU 11-3 in a run-rule victory.
The Bears will return to action on Wednesday, March 9 for their first home contest of the season against Wichita State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
