SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State took both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Arkansas State Sunday, topping the Red Wolves by scores of 12-3 and 7-1 at Hammons Field.
MSU (7-7) senior
Mason Hull reached base eight times and scored six runs,
Grant Wood drove in five, and the Bears' pitching staff combined to strike out 22 Arkansas State (4-9) hitters while issuing just five walks.
Missouri State continues its 10-game homestand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game against Kansas. Tickets are $3 for all 3 p.m. weekday games this season. The Bears defeated the Jayhawks 12-3 on March 2 in Lawrence.
Game 1 Recap (Missouri State won, 12-3)
The Bears scored 11 runs in the first four innings to cruise to a game one victory over the Red Wolves.
Wood with 3-for-4 with three RBI, Hull scored a career-high four runs and
Cam Cratic went 3-for-3 with his first MSU home run to lead the offensive charge.
The Bears scored five runs in the second on an RBI double from Wood, RBI single from
Mason Greer and three-run double from
Spencer Nivens.
The Red Wolves got three runs back in the third thanks to a pair of one-out doubles, and Missouri State immediately responded with three in the bottom of the inning thanks to Hull's two-run homer, his seventh of the year, and an RBI double from
Jaden Rolffs.
Wood added a two-run homer in the fourth, Cratic send one over the fence in right-center two batters later, and Greer added his second RBI hit of the game in the sixth for the final margin.
Adam Link (2-1) matched his MSU highs with six innings and six strikeouts in a strong start, and
Riyan Rodriguez threw the final three frames without allowing a hit for the save.
Game 2 Recap (Missouri State won, 7-1)
Forrest Barnes (2-1) struck out eight Red Wolves – the most for an MSU pitcher this season – in 5.1 innings of work, and
Trey Ziegenbein closed with 3.2 shutout innings for the save, fanning five to give the Bears a season-high 13 strikeouts in the game with one walk.
Greer and ASU's Eli Davis traded solo home runs to make it 1-1 after the innings, and the Bears broke it open with a four-run fifth.
Dakota Kotowski put MSU on top with an RBI single, Wood drove in a run with a ground out, and Missouri State added a pair of unconventional runs after that, scoring on a strikeout where the ASU pitcher threw wild to first while attempting to complete the out, and finishing by scoring on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.
Hull drew his fourth walk of the game in the seventh and scored on a Wood triple before Jenkins drove in Wood with a single to end the scoring for the Bears.
Wood has now reached safely in all 14 games this season.
