Baseball Bears Split Doubleheader with Cal Poly

Season Stats

ARLINGTON, Texas – Missouri State concluded its series with Cal Poly Sunday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with the Mustangs at Clay Gould Ballpark on the University of Texas at Arlington campus.

The Bears (3-4) collected 29 hits on the day, including 11 for extra bases, taking the first game 8-5 before a 14-12 setback in the second.

The Bears visit Kansas at 3 p.m. Wednesday before the hosting Indiana in a three-game series at Hammons Field. Game one against the Hoosiers is set for 3 p.m. Friday, March 4.

Game 1 Recap – Missouri State won 8-5
The Bears overcame a 5-0 deficit thanks to Mason Hull's grand slam in the sixth and Will Duff's bases-loaded triple in the eighth for the come-from-behind victory.

Cal Poly scored in four of the first six innings in building its 5-0 lead before the Bears broke through against starter Travis Weston in the bottom of the sixth. The bases were loaded for Hull thanks to singles from Drake Baldwin and Spencer Nivens before Dakota Kotowski worked a 10-pitch walk. Hull then sent his fourth home run of the year over the left field fence for a 5-4 score.

Trey Ziegenbein (1-1) entered the game in the seventh and shut down the Mustangs for the final three innings, allowing the Bears to complete the comeback in the eighth.

Hull, Mason Greer and Cam Cratic singled to load the bases, and Duff split the right-center gap to drive in all three runners before scoring on Baldwin's sacrifice fly for the 8-5 final.

Cal Poly got the tying run to the plate in the ninth when Ziegenbein shut the door.

Greer finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Baldwin, Duff and Hull had two hits apiece.

Game 2 Recap – Cal Poly won 14-12
Missouri State trailed by as many as eight runs before sending the tying run to the plate twice in the bottom of the ninth inning of a wild second game.

Cal Poly (4-3) led 4-0 after two at bats when Kotowski blasted a two-run homer followed by Cratic hitting a triple and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-3 after two innings.

The Mustangs scored three unearned, two-out runs in the third, Jaden Rolffs hit a sac fly in the fourth, and Cal Poly star prospect Brooks Lee belted a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 10-4.

A Baldwin double, Nivens triple and Wood single cut the deficit to 10-6 in the fifth before a Poly grand slam in the seventh pushed the margin to 14-6.

Wood belted a two-run double and scored on a Kotowski single in the eighth to make it 14-9, and the Bears loaded the bases with no one out on the ninth. A one-out wild pitch made it 14-10, then Wood hit an RBI single that left runners on the corners with one out and a 14-11 score. Greer's fielder's choice made it 14-12 before the Mustangs secured the final out.

Wood went 3-for-6 and tied a career high with four RBI, Kotowski was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Duff, Baldwin, Hull and Cratic each had two hits in the Bears' 16-hit offensive attack.
