Storylines for the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational
1) Missouri State will host the annual Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational Sept. 10-12 at Hammons Student Center, welcoming Louisiana Monroe, Tulane and Saint Louis for the event. The Bears play ULM at 6 p.m. Friday, Tulane at noon Saturday and SLU at 1 p.m. Sunday.
2) The Bears are predicted to finish fourth in a closely-contested preseason Missouri Valley Conference poll. MSU received one first-place vote and 71 total points, just eight behind favorite Illinois State. The top six teams in this year's poll are separated by 11 points.
3) Outside hitters Amelia Flynn and Brooklyn Cink each earned first-team all-MVC honors last year, making this the first season since 2010 that the Bears return two all-Valley first-teamers from the year before. The 2010 team won 21 matches and earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.
4) After averaging 1.61 aces per set last season, Missouri State's best figure since 1995, the Bears have improved to a 1.95 average this season. Of MSU's 148 aces last season, 147 return to the roster this year.
5) In addition to returning all but one ace from last season, the Bears also bring back 91 percent of kills, 99.8 percent of assists, 99.4 percent of digs, 86.2 percent of blocks and 91.1 percent of total points to this year's club.
6) The namesake of this weekend's tournament, Dr. Mary Jo Wynn, was the backbone of one of the most progressive and successful women's athletics programs in the country at Missouri State and a national pioneer for the cause of women's sports. She passed away in January 2019 at the age of 87.
7) The Bears are 9-2 at Hammons Student Center under head coach Steven McRoberts and have posted a winning home record in 22 consecutive seasons.
8) Missouri State has posted an overall winning record, both overall and in MVC play, 21 times in the last 22 seasons.
9) Missouri State second-year head coach Steven McRoberts became the 19th active Division I head coach with 600 career wins with MSU's 3-1 triumph against Bradley on March 22, 2021. He entered this fall ranked ranked 18th among active Division I coaches in total victories and 25th in winning percentage.
Series Histories
Missouri State is 2-0 against Louisiana Monroe with sweeps in 1976 and 1992.
The Bears are 2-1 versus Tulane with victories in 1976 (at a tournament that also included ULM) and 1980, and a loss to the Green Wave in New Orleans in 2019.
MSU is 20-1 all-time against Saint Louis, thought the programs have played just one time since 2004, and 3-1 Missouri State victory in the 2010 Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational.
