Baseball Bears Drop Series to Sycamores

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State baseball team played the final three outs of Saturday's resumption and lost the regularly-scheduled finale series Sunday at Hammons Field, falling to Indiana State by scores of 13-2 and 5-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

The Bears moved to 16-19 overall and 6-10 in MVC games, while ISU improved to 24-12 and 11-5 in league action.

On deck for Missouri State is a four-game set at Illinois State May 14-16. Friday's game will be a national TV appearance for the Bears, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPNU.

Game One Recap – Indiana State 13, Missouri State 2
The Sycamores led 13-2 after eight and a half innings before the game was suspended Saturday, and the teams played a quick bottom of the ninth Sunday morning.

Indiana State hit a pair of three-run homers in the fourth inning and piled up 17 hits to get three outs away from victory before time constraints suspended the game.

Missouri State got an RBI single from Jaden Rolffs in the fifth and sac fly from Cam Cratic in the sixth for its scoring.

Game Two Recap – Indiana State 5, Missouri State 2
Missouri State sent the winning run to the plate after trailing 5-0 entering its final at bat for an exciting final inning after ISU's Javin Drake was dominant for much of the contest.

Jack Duffy led off with a single for the Bears, who did not get another baserunner until the fifth or another hit until the seventh.

Meanwhile, the Sycamores turned two walks into two runs in the first, got an RBI double from Ellison Hanna in the seventh and RBI singles from Jordan Schaffer in both the seventh and ninth frames.

Drake Baldwin got MSU's ninth-inning rally started with a one-out single to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, and Ben Whetstone followed with a two-run homer to right. Whetstone's fifth home run of the season and 24th in his career pushed the sixth-year senior past 100 RBI as a Bear.

Cratic followed with a walk, Grant Wood singled and Dakota Kotowski walked to load the bases, and Walker Jenkins grounded out to second as the tying run to end the game.

Jared Viertel allowed three hits in six innings in the start, while Drake went 8.1 frames for ISU.
