SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State's
Mason Hull hit his second walk-off single of the season to hand the Bears a 4-3 victory over Indiana State Saturday morning in a continuation of a game that began Friday, while Saturday's second game was suspended with ISU leading 13-2 after eight and a half innings.
Like on Friday, the Springfield Cardinals have a game Saturday evening at Hammons Field, necessitating the agreement on end times for MSU games.
Saturday's game will resume at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by the regularly scheduled fourth and final game of the series.
Game One Recap – Missouri State 4, Indiana State 3 (8 innings)
Mason Hull's one-out single in the bottom of the eighth gave Missouri State the win and marked the third walk-off hit of the junior's career and second this season.
The game was slated for seven innings, meaning the Missouri Valley Conference extra inning rule was in place with teams beginning each turn at bat with a runner on second in the eighth.
After the Bears (16-17, 6-8 MVC) kept the Sycamores (22-12, 9-5) off the board in the top of the eighth, thanks in part to
Jack Duffy's diving catch to keep a run off the board, the Bears opened the bottom of the inning with
Cam Cratic on second base, had runners on the corners following a leadoff single by
Walker Jenkins, and won two batters later when Hull pulled a single through the left side to cap his 4-for-5, three-RBI game.
The Sycamores got all three of their runs in the fourth inning after the first three batters walked and scored on a pair of singles.
Hull swatted his second homer of the season in the fifth to make it 3-2, and
Ben Whetstone led off the seventh with a double and scored the tying run on a
Jaden Rolffs sacrifice fly.
The MSU defense turned a season-high four double plays, and
Trey Ziegenbein (6-0) pitched the final three innings in relief over two days, allowing just one hit.
Game Two Recap – Indiana State led 13-2 after entering bottom of 9th
Indiana State hit a pair of three-run homers in the fourth inning and piled up 17 hits to get three outs away from victory before time constraints suspended the game to Sunday.
Missouri State's
Drake Baldwin extended his hitting streak to 15 games, and the Bears got an RBI single from Rolffs and sac fly from Cratic for their two runs thus far.
