The Missouri State Bears (15-11, 5-3 MVC) are back in action for the first time since April 18 when they visit Southern Illinois (27-12, 6-10) for a four-game set from April 30-May 2.
Prime 9
1) Missouri State has won nine of its last 12 games and heads to Southern Illinois April 30-May 2 for a four-game series, the Bears' third Missouri Valley Conference set of the year.
2) Since a March 23 win at No. 18 Oklahoma State, five regulars in the offensive lineup are hitting above .300, while two players outside that group – Jaden Rolffs and Dakota Kotowski – have double-digit RBI totals. The bullpen duo of Trey Ziegenbein and Hayden Juenger have combined to go 6-0 with three saves, striking out a combined 35 batters in 31.1 innings of relief, including a 0.84 ERA in 14.1 MVC innings.
3) The Bears are in the midst of a 10-game road swing thanks to a recent five-game home stand canceled due to
COVID-19. Missouri State will go from April 6 to May 7 without playing at Hammons Field, and has had 10 home games lost from the schedule this season due to weather or virus-related cancellations and postponements.
4) Missouri State is 75-40 all-time against Southern Illinois. The Bears' 75 victories against SIU tie their historical win total against Indiana State, next weekend's scheduled opponent, for the most against any program.
5) Head coach Keith Guttin picked up his 1,300th career victory on April 13 at Missouri. Guttin's troops beat the Tigers 7-5 in Columbia, moving him into a tie for 18th on the all-time wins list with Fresno State's Bob Bennett. Guttin ranks third among active coaches in career wins.
6) The Bears have four victories this season in their final at bat. MSU won in 10 innings on March 30 at SEMO, and has walk-off wins on April 1 against Bradley (Cam Cratic bases-loaded HBP), April 2 vs. BU (Mason Hull single) and April 6 versus Drury (Drake Baldwin home run).
7) The MVC has a new format for league series this season, with teams meeting four times per weekend with a doubleheader on day two. The first game of the doubleheader will be scheduled for seven innings.
8) MSU has four college graduates on the roster, with Jack Duffy, Logan Geha, Ben Whetstone and Logan Wiley each electing to use the additional season eligibility granted to 2020 spring athletes.
9) Ben Whetstone ranks 4th nationally by drawing 1.08 walks per game, while Jaden Rolffs is 37th at 0.32 HR per game.
