Tennis opens Conference Play this Weekend

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's tennis team opens conference play this weekend when they host Bradley on Saturday and Illinois State on Sunday at Cooper Tennis Complex.  
  
"We have two great conference matches to start this weekend," head coach Hannah Keeling said. "We are focusing on one match at a time. I am looking forward to opening the conference schedule with Bradley tomorrow and I have no doubt we are ready to compete." 
  
The first match against Bradley will be played on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Braves are 5-5 on the season with wins over Eastern Michigan, SIU Edwardsville, Chicago State, Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois. In its last match out, Bradley was defeated by Illinois State, 4-3. Sandra Malentin is the Braves' top threat as she holds an 8-2 record while competing in the No. 1 singles position. 
  
Following the match against Bradley, Illinois State comes to town for a 10 a.m. tilt Sunday. The Redbirds have been battle-tested this year while competing in 20 matches, with a record of 13-7. Illinois State is on a three-match win-streak with wins over Saint Louis, Northern Illinois and Bradley. Laura Arciniegas is the Redbirds' top threat in singles play with a record 13-1 while competing in the No. 4 and 5 slots. 
  
The last time out, the Bears picked up a 5-2 win over Southwest Baptist at Cooper Tennis Complex. MSU raced out to a 1-0 lead as the doubles duos of Tiffani Nash and Alyson Piskulic (No. 2) and Mary Houston and Mara Presot (No. 3) were both victorious. In singles play, the Bears scored wins from Tiffani Nash (No. 2), Alyson Piskulic (No. 4), Mary Houston (No. 5) and Claire Martin (No. 6).

After this weekend's matches, the Bears will open their three-match road swing on April 10 when they visit Valparaiso. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
