TULSA, Okla. – Missouri State led 13-0 after the top of the fourth Tuesday afternoon, then gave up 10 unanswered runs to Oral Roberts before righting the ship to finish off a 14-11 victory over the Golden Eagles at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Now 2-0 for the eighth time in the last nine seasons, the Bears had nine players record a hit, 10 reach base safely and five drive in multiple runs, led by
Ben Whetstone's 2-for-2, four-walk effort to become the first MSU player to reach safely six times since Joey Hawkins in March 2013.
Missouri State posted multiple runs in each of the first four innings, getting three in the first when
Jack Duffy scored on a throwing error after drawing a leadoff walk and
Cam Cratic ripped a two-out, two-run triple to continue his hot start to the year.
Duffy followed with a three-run homer in the second, and the Bears batted around in the third, scoring on a single from
Walker Jenkins, a two-run base knock from Whetstone and a two-run homer by
Dakota Kotowski to make it 11-0.
Jaden Rolffs clubbed a two-run bomb in the fourth for his first MSU hit to make it 13-0 before ORU roared back, plating two runs in the bottom of the fourth and eight more in the fifth on just four hits to make it 13-10.
Missouri State got one back in the sixth when
Blake Mozley singled and later scored on a pair of throwing errors, and ORU added a ninth-inning home run to finish off a relatively uneventful final four innings.
Trey Zeigenbein picked up the win for MSU with four strikeouts in four innings of relief, and
Ethan Axman allowed two runs over four innings in his first career start.
MSU's run total was the team's highest since scoring 15 at Murray State in April 2019.
The Bears open the home season Feb. 26-28 with a three-game set against Central Arkansas at Hammons Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
