Five Track & Field Bears Collect MVC Scholar-Athlete Honors

April 07, 2020

MVC Release

ST. LOUIS – Five student-athletes from the Missouri State women's track and field team earned Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete recognition, announced by the league office here Tuesday.

Grace Breiten, Jordyn Capra, Jasmine Crawford, Rochelle Etienne, and Erica Wollmering each received the honor for their achievements both on the track/field and in the classroom.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 MVC Outdoor Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the criteria for the award was extended to include career athletic performances at the conference championships.  To be considered each student-athlete had to meet the following criteria and procedures:
  • 3.3 Cumulative GPA
  • At least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing
  • Placed in the top eight of an individual event or top three in a relay event at the Indoor T&F Championship
  • Any student-athlete who was scheduled to participate in the outdoor meet this spring (regardless of whether they participated in the indoor event this past February) who also meets the academic criteria and has met the athletic criteria in any previous MVC championship during their career
Breiten (Sr., Chesterfield, Mo.) placed fourth in the mile and ran the closing leg of the Bears' distance medley relay team that finished third at this year's conference indoor championship.  Breiten, a Special Education major with a 3.72 GPA, adds another scholar-athlete accolade after receiving the distinction for both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2018 and 2019.

Crawford (Jr., Riverside, Mo.) was also a part of that third-place distance medley relay team, running the third leg to help push the Bears to a season-best time of 11:59.08.  The junior distance runner boasts a 4.00 GPA as an Exercise and Movement Science major.

Capra (Sr., Carl Junction, Mo.) competed in the past three MVC outdoor championships for MSU with her highest mark coming on a seventh-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 meet.  Capra is an Animal Science major with a 3.93 GPA.

Etienne (Jr., Monchy, Gros-islet, St. Lucia) owns a fourth-place showing in the javelin from last year's conference outdoor championship.  Carrying a 3.56 GPA in Dietetics, she holds the program's fifth-best javelin mark with a 43.97-meter throw from the 2018 Tom Botts Invitational.

Wollmering (Sr., Kirksville, Mo.) finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run at the 2019 MVC Outdoor Championships after anchoring the distance medley relay team that placed third at the indoor competition that year.  Majoring in Administrative Management, Wollmering maintains a 3.91 GPA.
