MSU Men's Soccer Returns Home for Match Against Omaha

SPRINGFIELD – No. 19 Missouri State men's soccer (7-0-0) returns home to wrap up non-conference play against Omaha (1-5-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6:00 p.m. at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.

  • No. 19 Missouri State (7-0-0) continued its historic start to 2019 with a 4-0 win over Western Illinois (0-8-0) on Thursday, Sept. 26 in Macomb, Ill.
  • The Bears won their seventh straight match to open the season, becoming the first MSU team to accomplish this feat since the 1995 team started 7-0. 
  • The seven-game winning streak is MSU's longest since 2017, matching the seven-game stretch that went from Sept. 13, 2017 to Oct. 7, 2017.
  • MSU's attack ranks 14th in the nation in scoring offense with 16 goals on the season, outscoring opponents 16-3 through seven matches in 2019.
  • MSU is one of seven Division-I teams to remain perfect on the season, joining Stanford, SMU, Clemson, Virginia, Cal St. Fullerton, and Navy.
  • Josh Dolling leads the nation with his four game-winners, recording the go-ahead goal in the first four matches for the Bears.  After finishing atop the Missouri Valley Conference in goals scored (10) and total points (23) in 2018, he leads the league in both categories with five goals and 12 total points.
  • The Bears' defense leads the conference in goals against average (0.424), surrendering three goals and holding opponents to 11 shots on goal this season.  MSU has been unyielding defensively in the latter stages of matches, outscoring its opponents in the second half and overtime by a 10-0 margin.  
  • Goalkeeper Michael Creek has made all seven starts in goal this season for the Bears with eight saves and a total of 624:43 minutes played.
  • The Bears have six different players with two assists on the season as MSU ranks 20th nationally and leads the MVC in assists per game with 15 assists.
  • Stuart Wilkin was named MVC Offensive Player of the Week the league announced on Tuesday, Sept. 24, becoming the fourth MSU player to receive weekly MVC honors this season.  The Bears swept the MVC weekly accolades in Week 3 as Dolling and Kyle Hiebert were named MVC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.  Jack Denton was tabbed MVC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Missouri State's 3-0 shutout win over Kansas City on Sept. 7.
  • Picked as the Missouri Valley Conference frontrunner in the league's preseason poll, Missouri State is the only unbeaten team remaining in the MVC, boasting a 2-0-0 conference record.
Know the Foe
  • Omaha (1-5-2) fell 2-1 in a home match against Cal St. Northridge on Friday, Sept. 27.
  • The Mavericks have six different players who have scored a goal this season with Diego Gutierrez leading the team with 12 shots on the year.
  • Omaha ranks second in the Summit League with 34 shots on goal in eight matches.  Gutierrez and Marcos Bautista leads the Mavericks with both tallying five shots on goal this season.
  • Bob Warming is 8-13-3 in his second season as head coach for Omaha.  He is 12-6-6 against Missouri State in his coaching career which includes stints at Creighton and Saint Louis.  In his first match coaching against the Bears in almost a decade, Warming's squad lost 2-0 in last year's match on Aug. 31, 2018.
Series History
  • Missouri State leads the all-time series 2-0-1 against Omaha with the Bears winning the most recent match 2-0 on Aug. 31, 2018.
  • The two teams opened the all-time series in Springfield with Missouri State winning 1-0 on Sept. 1, 2013 in the lone home match of the series for the Bears.
  • Two of the three matches in the series have gone to double overtime with MSU winning 1-0 in the 2013 matchup and a 2-2 draw on Oct. 28, 2015.
  • Head coach Jon Leamy has been at the helm for the Bears in all three matches in the series.
