Track & Field Bears Ready for MVC Outdoor Championship

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State track and field team looks to build on a successful season this weekend (May 10-12) at the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by Indiana State. The meet, held at the Gibson Track & Field Complex, will kick-off at 11 a.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with the heptathlon, and will be led off on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. with the 4x100m relay.

Keeping Track of the Bears
  • Heading into the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championship, Missouri State holds 14 top-eight marks in the league in 12 events. Namibia Clavier (400-meter) and Jamilah James (triple jump) both hold top marks in the conference.
  • Last season at the MVC Outdoor Championship Missouri State took fifth place. The Bears return All-Conference performances from Jamilah James (triple jump), Sidne' Williamson (long jump) and Rochelle Etienne (javelin).
  • The 4x800-meter relay team of Edna Dar, Paityn Howat, Kayla Fallis and Madeline Saville reset the program record at the Drake Relays, putting up an 8:58.06 10th place finish. Besting the previous school record, set in 2017, nine seconds.
  • Grace Breiten holds the second fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the conference (10:28.67) and 40th in the NCAA West Region, set at the Drake Relays. The junior distance runner set the third fastest time in school history and took the event title.
  • Timeka Jordan, Taryn Smiley, Tomi Bamigbade and Namibia Clavier teamed up for a second place finish in the 4x100-meter relay at Drake, running the event in 47.05 seconds. 
  • James' season best triple jump mark of 12.46m ranks first in the Valley and 46th in the West Region.
  • A new era in Bears track and field has begun, with interim head coach Jordan Fife taking the reins, along with assistant coaches Carmelita Jeter and Jake Brydson.
  • Fife came to MSU in 2014 and has been the Bears head cross country coach for the past five seasons, while also serving as an assistant track and field coach.
  • MSU was picked by league coaches to finish fifth at the outdoor championship, the MVC announced Friday, May 3.
