SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara took advantage of seven Missouri State defensive miscues to plate nine unearned runs as part of an 11-1 victory that completed a three-game sweep of the Bears Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Rodney Boone (2-0) limited the Bears to a single run on three hits, while striking out 10 MSU hitters in his 6.0 innings of work. Thomas Rowan led a UCSB offense that registered six extra-base hits, reaching safely in three of his four trips to the plate in finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Tevin Mitchell and McClain O'Connor also recorded multi-hit efforts, and four different Gaucho hitters scored two runs in the contest.
The uncharacteristic defense from the Bears matched a single-game high for errors under
Keith Guttin, equaling a total posted seven times previously during the 37th year head coach's tenure.
But most significantly, UCSB (17-3) cashed in on a pair of MSU errors to plate three third-inning runs, turning a one-run affair into a 5-1 margin. A one-out walk to Tommy Jew ignited the key rally, and Rowan followed with a base hit that was misplayed for a run-scoring error, giving the Gauchos a 3-1 advantage. Next, Armani Smith's fly ball to right was mishandled as well, allowing Rowan to score on a three-base error. A sac fly off the bat of Jason Willow was hauled in by
Jack Duffy in center, but Smith trotted home easily from third to cap the rally.
MSU starter
Logan Wiley (0-5) worked around another dropped fly ball in the fourth, then stranded another Gaucho in scoring position in the fifth after Rowan led off the inning with one of five UCSB doubles in the game.
Boone wouldn't need any additional help, as the left-hander cruised from that point. After allowing the lone Missouri State run of the game on a two-out
Mason Hull double in the second, Boone permitted just two more Bears baserunners—both coming on
Drew Millas hits. The freshman struck out the side in the first and fifth frames, eight straight MSU hitters from the third through the sixth innings.
The Gauchos put the game—and the series—on ice with a six-run seventh that featured three additional errors, as well as a 'walk-off' wild pitch that allowed the decisive tally to score and invoke the ten-run rule. After a pair of walks, a steal and two errors opened the inning, O'Connor singled home a run, and Mitchell drove a triple into the left-center field gap to chase home another baserunner, as UCSB would need just two hits to produce its six runs in the inning.
In all, nine of the 11 UCSB runs were scored as unearned, as the Bears (5-16) turned in their first game committing at least six errors in over 10 years.
Millas was the lone Bear to log a multi-hit effort, finishing 2-for-3, as MSU's offense generated only three hits and registered just five total baserunners in the seven-inning contest.
