Cowboys' Early Offensive Barrage Extends Bears’ Slide

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State used a trio of home runs to score its first five runs, then rode the right arm of Brett Standlee to a 13-2 victory over Missouri State Tuesday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

OSU (10-5) raced to an eight-run lead through the first five innings, scoring three times with a two-out rally in the second, before adding four more in the fourth and a single tally in the fifth. Trevor Boone led the Cowboys' power surge, belting a pair of two-run homers, before driving in a fifth run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to help send the Bears to their sixth-consecutive setback.

Given the sizable cushion, Standlee (2-0) kept the Bears at bay throughout his 7.0 shutout innings. The freshman held the Bears hitless until Jack Duffy led off the third with a single and scattered six hits altogether while fanning eight hitters.

After MSU starter Forrest Barnes (0-1) worked a scoreless first and quickly dispatched the first two OSU hitters of the second, Bryce Carter doubled and Boone clubbed the first of his two key long balls for a two-run Cowboy lead. Cade Cabbiness, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, followed with a solo shot to right-center to hand the home club an early 3-0 advantage.

Two innings later, Boone would strike again, launching another two-run blast to left for a 5-0 OSU lead. A dropped pop foul led to two more runs in the fourth, as Hueston Morrill and Andrew Navigato brought in runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies. Boone's fly ball to center with Carson McCusker on third stretched the margin to eight runs in the fifth.

Bears junior lefty Nate Witherspoon was able to stop the bleeding with 4.0 solid innings of relief after taking over mound duties for Barnes in the fourth. Witherspoon permitted just the one  OSU run in the fifth, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two Cowboys.

MSU mounted its lone scoring rally in the top of the eighth, taking advantage of three two-out walks to put its first runs of the day on the scoreboard. After OSU reliever Tanner Sparks issued three free passes to load the bases, Brooks Zimmerman absorbed a pitch to force home a run. Next, Joey Polak lined his third-straight hit into left to plate another, pulling the Bears to within six runs.

But OSU cranked its offense into gear one more time in the home half of the eighth, battering a pair of Bears relievers for five runs on five hits. Cabbiness started the rally with his third hit of the game, and the top of the Cowboys batting order delivered four consecutive run-producing hits to put the game on ice.

The bottom four hitters in the OSU lineup tormented MSU pitching, finishing the day a combined 7-for-10 with six RBIs and eight runs scored. In addition to big days by Boone and Cabbiness, Carter went 2-for-2 with two runs scored to spur the Cowboys' 12-hit attack.

Polak paced the MSU offense with his first three-hit game as a Bear.

Up next, the Bears (3-11) continue their tour of Oklahoma with a 3 p.m., game Wednesday (March 13) against Oral Roberts at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa.
