Bears Begin Two Game Road Stretch at Tulsa

SPRINGFIELD – After a season opening victory over Western Illinois on Thursday, the Missouri State women's soccer team will head out on the road its next two games, beginning with Tulsa on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 2:00 p.m. Two days later the Bears will travel to Cape Girardeau to face Southeast Missouri State with kick off slated for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Missouri State Quick Kicks
  • Newcomer Kennady Orlick scored the Bears' first goal of the 2018 regular season to lift Missouri State past Western Illinois, 1-0, in its home opener.
  • Eights Bears notched shots in the home opener with six occurring in the first and three during the latter half. Junior Ashley Coonfield led the Bears with two shots, both of them on goal.
  • Three of Missouri State's four leading scorers, Brooke Prondzinski, Jordan Eickelman, and Kayleigh Putnam, return this season with eight total starters and 17 letterwinners.
  • Missouri State earned the runner-up spot in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll while junior Brittney Robinson garnered a preseason all-conference team selection. The Bears were one of three institutions to earn first-place votes in the poll with two and 50 points.
Scouting Tulsa
  • Severe weather postponed Tulsa's season opener against Oklahoma State, making Sunday's match versus the Bears its first game of the regular season.
  • In its lone exhibition game of the preseason Tulsa tied Little Rock, 1-1, with the goal coming from freshman forward Mia Darden.
  • Head Coach Kyle Cussen, who is in his 11th season at the helm, is the programs' winningest coach with 91 wins in 10 seasons. 
  • Tulsa finished ninth in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll with 18 points.
Scouting Southeast Missouri State
  • The Redhawks dropped their season opener to Evansville, 2-1, Thursday evening. Southeast Missouri State got on the board first with a goal from junior Esmie Gonzales but two goals from Evansville, one coming in the final five minutes, propelled the Aces to victory.
  • Southeast Missouri State is picked fourth in the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll.
  • Junior Esmie Gonzales was the Redhawks leading scorer last season collecting eight goals and three assists. She was named first-team all-conference along with Lexi Grote who also took home OVC All-Newcomer honors.
  • Head coach Heather Nelson has spent 18 seasons at the helm of the Southeast Missouri State women's soccer program, making her the only coach since the program's inception in 1999. She carries a 174-113-44 record.
Series History
 
Tulsa:
  • Missouri State is 5-13-2 in the series history against Tulsa. The last time the Bears won was 1-0 in August 2008 with the Golden Hurricanes winning the next eight meetings, four of which advanced into double overtime.
  • Last season, the Bears took Tulsa to double overtime but a goal at the 108th minute gave the Golden Hurricanes the 3-2 win.
Southeast Missouri State:
  • The Bears hold the 7-2-0 series advantage over Southeast Missouri State. Last season Missouri State secured a 2-0 win at home with goals coming from returners Kayleigh Putnam and Brooke Prondzinski. The victory marked the Bears fifth straight against the Redhawks since 2004.

  • Missouri State will play Tulsa on Sunday, Aug. 19 starting at 2:00 p.m. before traveling to in-state rival Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday, August 21 for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.
