Women’s Soccer Season Opener Slated for Thursday

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team opens its 2018 regular season against Western Illinois at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 16 starting at 6:00 p.m.

Missouri State Quick Kicks
  • Three of Missouri State's four leading scorers, Brooke Prondzinski, Jordan Eickelman, and Kayleigh Putnam, are set to return with eight total starters and 17 letterwinners, while a talented group of incoming freshmen look to make an impact.
  • Missouri State earned the runner-up spot in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll while junior Brittney Robinson garnered a preseason all-conference team selection. The Bears were one of three institutions to earn first-place votes in the poll with two and 50 points.
  • The Bears went 10-9-2 last season including a 1-0 victory against Northern Iowa in the MVC Championship to claim its second conference championship in program history along with a berth in the NCAA tournament.
  • Head coach Rob Brewer is three wins away from his 200th victory with the Missouri State program. Brewer is entering his 23rd season with the Bears.
Scouting Western Illinois
  • The Leathernecks finished the 2017 season 2-15 including a 9-1 win over Chicago State.
  • Senior forward Madeline Edwards was named a Summit League Player to Watch after starting all 17 matches last season, during which she had two goals and a pair of assists.
  • Western Illinois sees the return of Bianca Romay and Emily Bollman, its two top scorers from the previous season.
  • Head coach Eric Johnson is starting his third season at the helm for the Leathernecks. He also coaches the men's soccer program at Western Illinois.
Series History
  • Missouri State holds the advantage in the series over the Leathernecks 3-2-0. The Bears last victory came in a 2-0 shutout win on Sunday, Sept. 20. during the 2015 season which saw current senior Brooke Prondzinski score both goals.
  • Western Illinois claimed their own victory during the 2016 season to cut the series lead to one for the Bears. Both teams did not meet during 2017.
