Softball Falls To SEMO, Lighting Issues Stall Second Game

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After dropping a one-run decision to the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri, faulty lighting halted the Missouri State softball team's matchup against Saint Louis, Saturday at Missouri 3&2 Complex.

SEMO 2, Missouri State 1
Though the Bears out-hit the Redhawks seven-to-six, one inning was all it took for the Redhawks to scratch across two runs. SEMO jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second inning after a walk and a pair of hits off junior Holly Kelley brought in runners from first and second base.

The Bears threatened to score in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, but couldn't bring home Bears in scoring position. After another scoreless inning, Missouri State fired back in the bottom of the sixth after a pair of hits placed runners on the corners.

On a full count, freshman Darby Joerling took off from first on a pitch that resulted in a walk for Elena Gambill. The SEMO catcher threw down to second to try and catch Joerling and, as a result, Kyana Mason successfully stole home to cut the Redhawks' lead, 2-1.

Preventing SEMO from scoring in the top of the seventh, Missouri State returned to the batter's box at the top of its lineup. After starting the inning with a leadoff single into right field, Erika Velazquez Zimmer was moved over to second on a groundout, but was later caught in a run-down between second and third for out number two. Ending the inning on a pop up, the Bears were unable to overcome the one-run deficit as they fell to Southeast Missouri, 2-1.

Despite the second-inning setback, Kelley held the Redhawks scoreless the remainder of the game, throwing seven complete innings and striking out a season-high four hitters. The junior surrendered just one walk in 25 at-bats, inducing 10 fly balls and five grounders.

Missouri State vs. Saint Louis
Due to lighting issues, the game was suspended and will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in the bottom of the second inning. There were no runs, hits or errors through two innings. Following the end of the game, Missouri State will then play in either a consolation game at 1 p.m. or championship game at 3 p.m. For more information on the Missouri State softball team, visit www.missouristatebears.com.
