The Missouri State men's soccer team (9-4-2, 5-2-1 MVC) completed regular-season action with a 0-0 double overtime draw with Drake here Saturday evening.
With the draw, the Bears claimed their first outright Missouri Valley Conference Championship since 2014 as well as the No. 1 seed for next week's MVC Tournament. It is also the program's fourth Valley crown in seven seasons and seventh MVC championship all-time for the Bears.
The Bears outshot Drake, 18-9, during the 110-minute contest, marking a new season high for the squad. MSU was paced by Stuart Wilkin
and Josh Dolling
with four shots apiece. Dolling also placed two shots at goal.
All 18 shots came in regulation with five shots on goal.
The Bears held Drake to just nine shot attempts with five on goal. The Bulldogs recorded seven corner kicks during the match, including four corners in the first overtime.
MSU was able to keep Drake out of goal with senior goalkeeper Liam Priestley
making five timely saves to preserve his 10th
shutout of the season – and 24th of his career. He now ranks second in Missouri State history in career shutouts and third on the single-season shutout list.
The Bears are now 1-0-2 in overtime contests this season.
Next up for the Bears is the 2017 MVC Championship that will take place in Peoria, Ill., November 7-12 at historic Shea Stadium. MSU owns a bye into the semifinals and will take on the winner of No. 4 Loyola and No. 5 Evansville on Friday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m.
