Swim Bears Wrap Up Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Missouri State swimming and diving team broke two program records on the final day of the Purdue Invitational, Saturday at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
 
Through 42 events, Florida claimed the men's field with 1,009 points. Indiana came in second with 847 points, followed by Virginia Tech (530), host Purdue (361), Missouri State (327), Southern Illinois (141), Navy (122) and North Carolina (109).
 
On the women's side, Indiana won the invitational with 896 points while Florida was named the runner-up (663). Virginia Tech came in a close third with 601 points, followed by Purdue (538), FIU (331), Missouri State (208), Southern Illinois (130) and North Carolina (84).
 
MISSOURI STATE WOMEN
Another Missouri State school record was broken after freshman Libby Howell broke through a five-year-old record in the 1650 freestyle. She snapped the record with a time of 16:41.67 which placed her 12th overall in the event.
 
Speedster Anna Miller made her mark in the record book as well after she recorded a time personal-best time of 50.41 seconds in the 100 free finals. The freshman finished 18th overall and her time sits third all-time in program history. Another Bear to set a personal best, senior Emma Wall improved her individual record in the 200 fly to 1:58.37 – which beats her second-place time in the program record book.
 
Vikte Labanauskaite, Josie Pearson and Sydney Zupan brought in points for the Bears as they each made appearances in the B-finals of their respective events.  Labanauskaite, a sophomore, pulled out a 10th-place finish in the 200 breast (2:16.51) and Zupan took 11th in the 200 back with a B-cut time of 1:57.56. Pearson was the last Bear to make the B-finals, where she finished 12th overall.
 
Another notable swimmer was sophomore Sarah Allegri, who tallied two b-cuts on the day. Qualifying for the C-final during the prelims session, she returned later in the evening and clinched the 17th overall spot in 1:58.43.
 
To cap off the evening, Zupan, Miller, Loretta Stelnicki and Howell combined for a new program record in the 400 free relay. The four posted a time of 3:23.50 that surpassed the previous record by 0.85 seconds. Altogether, the Bears brought in five B-standard times on the day and had 13 swimmers compete in the finals.

MISSOURI STATE MEN
Highlighted by Artur Osvath's first-place outing in the 200 breast prelims, the Bears had earned appearances in the night's finals session. Missouri State brought in two B-standard times during the prelims – one from Osvath and the other from Christopher Heye.
 
Kicking off finals action, distance swimmers Antonio Thomas and Minki Kang put on impressive performances in the 1650 free. Posting their first times of the season in the mile, Thomas finished fourth overall in 15:07.78 and Kang took ninth with a time of 15:24.20. Both of their times met B-standards and are the fastest times in the Mid-American Conference so far this season.
 
In the Bears' highest finish of the night, Osvath posted his fastest time of the season with a 1:55.06 (B) swim in the 200 breast. He finished second overall while Heye clinched seventh-place with his second B-cut time of the day (1:58.82). After earning an appearance in finals session, Phillip Willett came back to win the B-final with a time of 1:58.21 (B).
 
Senior Kacper Cwiek was the other Bear to make the A-finals, where he posted a seventh-place time of 1:48.63 in the 200 fly. Sophomore Conner Ripp also took part in the event, where he placed 13th overall. The Bears found consecutive finishes in the 100 free as Lucas Paloschi and Samuel Senn went 17-18 in the C-final.
 
Osvath, Paloschi, Jacob Schultz and Senn finished off the meet in the 400 free where the squad posted a time of 3:00.61 in a third-place effort.
