SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State men's soccer team dropped its senior day match Saturday evening at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium, falling 2-1 to visiting Loyola.
Despite the setback, the Bears (9-4-1, 5-2 MVC) clinched the No. 1 seed for the MVC Tournament, thanks in part to Bradley's upset of Central Arkansas on Saturday.
"It was two good teams," MSU head coach
Jon Leamy said. "It was a hard-fought game, and we knew it would be. A lot of emotion with the last regular-season game here and our senior night. We came out and scored a goal to start out on the right foot."
The Bears opened scoring in the eighth minute when
Josh Dolling made a quick move around a defender to score from 12 yards out. It was Dolling's fourth goal of the season and came from an assist from
Conor Ingram.
Loyola tied the match in the 17th minute when Fabian Lifka scored a goal from six yards out off an assist from Elliot Collier.
The score remained knotted until midway through the second half when MSU let in an own goal on the left side of the field in the 68th minute. The goal put Loyola up 2-1 with 22 minutes left in the match. The Bears got off four shots in the time remaining, but could not come up with the tying goal.
MSU recorded 10 shots during the match with just one on goal.
Kyle Hiebert led MSU with a career high three shots.
"We have a lot of soccer left," Leamy said. "We have one more regular-season game (Nov. 4 at Drake) and then we're going to get ready for the MVC Tournament."
The 2017 MVC Championship will take place in Peoria, Ill., November 7-12 at historic Shea Stadium.
