ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Missouri State men's soccer team (2-2) battled it out with CSU Bakersfield (1-4) into overtime, where the Roadrunners scored an own goal to give the Bears the 1-0 win at the Grange and Ashwill Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, on Sunday (Sept. 11)
One minute and 21 seconds into overtime,
Jake Buckle posted up on the near-side of the box and called for the ball from one of his teammates. From 10 yards out, Buckle punched the ball across the mouth of the goal in hopes of finding an open
Emmerich Hoegg. CSUB's Jaime Velazquez charged in front of Hoegg in an attempt to kick the ball out of bounds, however, the Roadrunner kicked into the top of his own net.
"We played good soccer in New Mexico," commented head coach
Jon Leamy. "We are still learning and growing as a team but we continued to pressure CSU Bakersfield today and that was how we were able to get the win today. The guys are ready to return home and play in front of their fans."
MSU made the Roadrunner goalkeeper Nicolas Clever work early on as
Scott Midgley fired the first shot of the match for either team in the fifth minute, sending it right into the hands of the keeper. Over the next ten minutes,
Conor Ingram and
Ben Stroud each took a shot, sending the ball wide of the goal.
As the first half came to a close, Midgley headed the ball and it rattled off the post into the feet of teammate
Tucker Brown, who took the final shot of the half for the Bears, but was unable to convert.
The Roadrunners held the 4-3 shot advantage in the second half over the Bears.
Mike Lightbourne took the final shot in regulation for the MSU in the 83
rd minute. Despite CSUB taking 10 shots in the match, Missouri State's defense only allowed one ball to get close to the goal as MSU's keeper,
Liam Priestley, came up with the save.
An all-tournament team is expected to be announced at the conclusion of tonight's match between New Mexico and Grand Canyon.
