SPRINGFIELD – Senior
Emmerich Hoegg netted his 14
th-career goal in Missouri State men's soccer's (2-2-1) 1-1 draw against Oral Roberts (3-3-1) on Saturday (Sept. 17) at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. This is the third-consecutive meeting that the Bears and Golden Eagles have played to a double-overtime draw.
"It was a competitive match with two teams that came to play," commented head coach
Jon Leamy. "The boys put a lot of energy in out here tonight to get back into the game. We just have to be more intelligent with the ball."
Hoegg started the action for the Bears in the 9
th minute of the match, knocking a header just wide and left of the goal post. Less than a minute later, Hoegg pushed back at ORU by beating his defender but the defense of the Golden Eagles forced his second shot of the night out-of-bounds.
In the 28
th minute of the match, momentum changed in favor of ORU, allowing Santiago Riveros to net his second goal of the season and allow the Golden Eagles to take the 1-0 lead over the Bears.
With less than two minutes left in the first half, MSU's
Stuart Wilkin found himself open in front of the goal line and appeared to have the tying goal for the Bears but an ORU defender was able to back up his goalkeeper and force the ball just right of the post to set up a corner kick for the Bears.
Missouri State pressured the Golden Eagles to open the second half, gaining early possession of the ball. One minute and six seconds into the second half, Wilkin connected with Hoegg, to net the first goal of the season for the senior and 14
th of his career.
The Bears were able to maintain possession in the second half and throughout both overtime periods, firing half of the team's total shots and forcing the ORU keeper to make five of his seven saves in the three periods. MSU's goalkeeper,
Liam Priestley, recorded five saves of his own, including the potential game-winner for the Golden Eagles in the 110
th minute of the match.
A total of 18 shots were taken by the Bears compared to 10 shots taken by ORU. Hoegg led the way for MSU, tallying five shots on the night. Wilkin and Buckle each took three and four shots, respectively, while six more Bears recorded a shot of their own to add to MSU's total shots.
The Bears will continue their homestand on Tuesday (Sept. 20) when the UMKC Roos visit Allison South Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., Missouri State's swimming and diving teams will be hosting a free cookout to the first 500 students through the gate, along with a pregame concert by local recording artists Luna Jamboree. Tuesday's match will be the second men's soccer production at MSU featured on
