ST. LOUIS – Missouri State defender Nick Burtenshaw
has been selected Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Aug. 29). This honor is Burtenshaw's first career award and first for the Bears in the 2016 season.
"Nick is a valuable asset to our defense," commented head men's soccer coach Jon Leamy
. "He is a versatile player that cannot only defend well but produce some scoring opportunities at the other end."
Playing all but 11 minutes of the 2016 season opener, Burtenshaw helped save one of the only looks Green Bay had in the match. In the 49th minute of the contest, one of Green Bay's players broke away for what looked like a one-on-one situation with MSU's goalkeeper. Burtenshaw darted from behind to catch up with Green Bay's player that was set to take a shot and jumped in front of the ball, preventing what could have been the game-winning goal for the Phoenix. He also took two shots of his own to contribute to MSU's 18-1 shot count.
Burtenshaw and the Bears open the month of September on the road at the University of Memphis (Sept. 4) with a 2 p.m. kickoff at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Memphis holds the series record over Missouri State, 6-5-2.
