SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State track and field team has been chosen to finish second at the 2016 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in a poll of league coaches, the conference office announced Monday. The three-day meet will take place May 13-15 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The reigning MVC outdoor women's track and field champion Wichita State Shockers received eight first-place votes and 80 total points in this season's pre-championship poll. The Bears finished second in the poll with 68 points and the Salukis claimed third in the voting, closely behind, with 64 points.
The Illinois State Redbirds, who claimed the crown at the 2016 MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships, tied with UNI in the voting with 50 total points. Indiana State (37), Drake (28), Bradley (18), and Loyola (10) rounded out the rest of the results on the women's side.
A total of 11 student-athletes currently hold top-8 marks in the MVC in 11 individual events. The Bears also hold the first- and second-fastest time in the league in the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay, respectively. The top-eight finishes in each individual event at the conference meet will be accounted for in the final score. First place receives 10 points, second place collects eight, and the pattern will continue (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1).
This year's outdoor championships will be carried on The Valley On ESPN3 and will be available through the WatchESPN app.
