LAWRENCE, Kan. - Three Missouri State track and field student-athletes competed in two individual events on the first day of competition at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round.
Due to inclement weather, events scheduled for Thursday evening were pushed back to an early start on Friday morning. With the change in the schedule, each running event would be treated as a quarterfinal, skipping the first round of competition and condensing a field of 48 runners to 12 that would advance to Eugene in their respective events. The top-six finishers in each heat would automatically qualify followed by the next six-fastest times overall.
Sprinters Marissa Kurtimah and Shavonne Husbands opened the first day of competition for the Bears, running in the second heat of the 100-meter dash. Oregon's Hannah Cunliffe set the pace for the heat and event, clocking in a winning time of 11.13 seconds. Kurtimah darted to a third-place finish in the heat with a time of 11.56 seconds while Husbands finished sixth after crossing the line in 11.79 seconds.
Kurtimah finished just shy of qualifying for the final championships in the 100-meter dash after placing 15th overall. Her time of 11.56 seconds was just four one-hundredths of a second behind Washington's Kennadi Bouyer, who captured the final national qualifying spot. Wrapping up her collegiate career in the 100-meter dash, Husbands finished 30th overall in the event.
Shani Adams finished fifth in heat three and 28th overall in the 400-meter hurdles to wrap up competition for MSU on Friday. The junior clocked in a time of 59.70 seconds to finish the event in less than one minute for the second time this season.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round will conclude Saturday when four Bears - Kurtimah, Husbands, Holly Pattie-Belleli, and Robiann Broomfield - and MSU's 4x100-meter relay team will look to punch their tickets to the final championships. The relay will be the first to compete with a scheduled start time of 10 a.m.
