ST. LOUIS – Two Missouri State women's soccer student-athletes,
Molly Brewer and
Rachel Catrell, were named to the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team, the league office announced Tuesday (Nov. 14). The honor is the third of Brewer's career and the first postseason accolade from the Valley for Catrell.
Brewer makes her third appearance on the MVC scholar-athlete team after missing the entirety of the 2015 season due to an injury she sustained in the preseason. Playing in 12 matches for the Bears this season, Brewer finished fifth on the team in shots (15) and tied for second on the squad in goals (3), that included the game-winner against Indiana State (Oct. 15). She became the sixth player in program history to register 16 goals, finished her career with 15 assists - the second most in MSU school history - and is seventh all-time in career shots with 124. She graduated in May 2016 with a degree in general business and is currently pursuing her M.B.A. Carrying a perfect 4.00 grade point average, Brewer was the only women's soccer student-athlete in the MVC to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
Catrell takes home her first postseason accolade from the league after excelling for the Bears on the field and in the classroom. Playing in all 17 matches for MSU, Catrell finished third on the team in shots with 18, as 10 of those were taken during conference play, to give her 35 total in her three-year career. She led the team with five assists, which included the game-winning helper against Indiana State. The child and family development major holds a 3.80 GPA in the classroom and is a two-time recipient of the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award.
The criteria for the all-MVC honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or played in the league tournament. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
