Johnson Paces Bears in First Round in Hot Springs

Missouri State's Rachel Johnson is tied for the lead after 18 holes at the Little Rock Classic women's golf tournament in Hot Springs Village, Ark. Johnson's two-under-par 70 Sunday (Oct. 30) paced the Bears to a 304 team score, which puts them ninth in the 16-team field. She's tied with June Ting of UTEP atop the 86-player field. A sophomore from Anderson, Ind., Johnson carded five birdies on her way to her career-best round at the par 72, 6177-yard Diamante Country Club.

In the team race, UTEP leads the tightly-bunched field with 295, just a shot ahead of UMKC and three ahead of Central Arkansas. North Texas is fourth at 299, followed by Little Rock and Houston Baptist (300), Jacksonville State (302), Stephen F. Austin (303), the Bears and Sam Houston State (307) rounding out the top 10.

Individually for MSU, junior Verena Gimmy was second and tied for 11th overall after shooting 74, while sophomore Ashley Childers posted 79 and is tied for 57th. Senior Caroline Boone had an 81 and freshman Ryan Pate shot 82 for the Bears.

Monday's second round is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
