Omaha, Neb. - The Missouri State men's soccer team (3-3-2) fell to the top-ranked team in the nation, Creighton (9-0-0), in a hard-fought battle by a 4-0 margin here Tuesday.
The Bears were able to maintain possession until the 20th minute of the match, when Creighton's Timo Pitter was able to make a run and tap one in to give the Bluejays the 1-0 advantage early on.
MSU was determined and nearly converted a corner kick in the 24th minute, as Jack Griffin took the first shot by the Bears sending the ball just high of the goal.
The second goal of the match came in the 26th minute from a free kick opportunity about 25 yards out after a MSU foul. Creighton's Fabian Herbers, took the free kick, tallying his eighth goal of the season. Herbers leads the Big East Conference this season in goals scored. Creighton tacked on the last two goals in the 28th and 31st minutes of the match.
Four Bears got shots off in Tuesday night's match. Griffin, reigning MVC Defensive Player of the Week, led the way for the Bears tallying two shots to add to the eight shots he has this season so far. Griffin is three shots away from surpassing his 2014 total (12). Freshman Harry Lewis and junior Tyler Swanner each took a shot for the Bears, with Swanner's shot on the goal.
The Bears (1-0, MVC) are currently tied for first place in the MVC with Bradley and Drake. MSU will face Drake Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa to continue conference play. The Bears return home Tuesday, Oct. 6 to face Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m.
