ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Missouri State senior Lauren Fussell earned Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Tuesday (Sept. 29). It is the first weekly honor for Fussell and she becomes the third Bear this season to pocket league defensive honors (Cassie Le, Sept. 15; Masen Stamp, Sept. 1).
Fussell played all 180 minutes in helping the Bears to a 2-0-0 week and a conference-opening victory over UNI on Saturday. The senior leader has guided the Bears defense to dominant performances holding opponents to just a single shot on goal in each of MSU's last three matches.
Fussell's presence as a center back squashed the offensive attack of the Panthers, who were allowed just four total shot in Saturday's match.
The Bears hit the Valley road for a match at Loyola on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 1:00 p.m. and travel to Indiana State on Oct. 10 as part of the road trip. MSU returns to Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium on Oct. 17 against Illinois State for a 6:00 p.m. tilt.
