Bears Finish Ninth at Missouri, Pettersen Sets Another Mark

Sept. 29, 2015

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri State women's golf team slipped to ninth place Tuesday (Sept. 29) in the final round of the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo. The Bears were tied for sixth after the first 36 holes after opening the tournament with a season-low 296 Monday morning and following with a school-record 288 in the afternoon, but their final-round 303 dropped them three spots. Still, the 887 tournament total was the second-best 54-hole mark in MSU history.

Sophomore Stine Pettersen added her name to another column in the record book Tuesday after her second-round 65 Monday shattered the MSU record by three shots. She added a final-round 75 to 72-65 for a three-round 212, which broke the old school standard of 215 set by Kelsey Welber in 2011. Pettersen tied for sixth overall in the tournament, which was played at the par 72, 6204-yard Old Hawthorne Club.

Sophomore Verena Gimmy was second for the Bears and tied for 33rd overall, shooting 74-72-75--221. Freshmen Ashley Childers and Fay Carpenter tied for 65th with 229 totals. Childers carded 74-79-76, while Carpenter had 78-74-77. Senior Megan Furnish was another shot back in 69th place with 76-77-77--230. Missouri's Jess Meek claimed medalist honors with 67-67-67--201, 15 under par.

Missouri also ran away from the 18-team field, shooting 280-269-276--825 to post a 25-stroke win over runnerup Middle Tennessee State, which had 850. Iowa and Kansas State tied for third with 864, followed by Florida International (871), Coastal Carolina (874), South Florida (876), Wichita State (880), the Bears and Akron rounding out the top 10 (887).

Then came Little Rock (888), Rutgers (893), Mercer (898), UMKC (901), Bradley (902), Florida Gulf Coast (909), Arkansas State (913) and Illinois State (916).

MSU is back in action next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 5-6) at the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
