MADISON, Ill. - A sensational second-round by Missouri State's men's golf team Monday has propelled coach Neal Stafford's Bears into third place at the 15-team SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational here with 18 holes to play.
MSU's second-round 281 included a 69 from senior Brik Brauburger who opened the event Monday with a first-round 68 to put him five under through 36 holes and tied for fifth place in the 88-man field.
Freshman Adam Fisher is tied for 18th with an even-par 142, followed closely by senior Joey Johnson (+1), last week's MVC Player of the Week, who is tied for 21st. MSU also got good starts Monday from fellow senior Mitch Mather (+4) and freshman Kory Franks (+5) who are both in the upper division through 36. Four Bears - Brauburger, Fisher, Johnson and Mather - all shot par or better for the second 18 holes.
The field is led by host SIU Edwardsville which sits at 15-under 553 after two rounds with Belmont jumping from 10th to second with a second-round 269 to put the Bruins nine strokes off the lead (562). MSU (564) is in third place, while South Dakota (565), Bradley (567), Austin Peay (567), UT Martin (570), Tennessee Tech (570), Western Illinois (570) and Oakland (574) round out the top 10.
The first round was delayed Monday morning due to fog, but Tuesday's final 18 holes are set to get underway at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start from the Gateway Golf Links course.
