SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State men's soccer team (2-2-2) will play SIU Edwardsville (4-2-1) in a conference championship rematch on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.
MSU is coming off of its second win of the season after topping No. 18 Loyola Marymount 2-1 on Sunday (Sept. 20). Freshman Jake Buckle was able to score twice for the Bears, while teammates Harry Lewis and Brandon Barbero contributed assists. Buckle became the first Bear since 2013 (Jack Roberts) to score two goals in one match.
SIUE enters the match on a four-game shutout streak, after getting a 2-0 win over Wisconsin Tuesday (Sept. 22). Sophomore Devyn Jambga leads the Cougars with three goals and two assists on the season.
MSU head coach Jon Leamy is ready to begin conference play against a tough SIUE team in Saturday's big match.
"SIUE is a good team and this will be a good match-up," said Leamy. "They are a talented group of young men that are well-coached. We have been working hard all week and we are ready to make our adjustments on the field."
Last season, the Bears captured the conference regular-season title before falling to SIUE, 1-0, in the championship game of the MVC Tournament. The Cougars netted the game-winner in the 108th minute to win the championship crown and NCAA Tournament bid with a thrilling double-overtime decision over MSU.
Admission for the SIUE game Saturday is free for all fans. The first 300 fans through the gate will receive a MSU rally towel.
The Bears embark on a two-game road swing next week with road games at Creighton (Sept. 29) and Drake (Oct. 3) before returning to Allison South Stadium on Oct. 6 to face Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m.
