INDIANAPOLIS -- On Thursday, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced the participants for next week's Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships competition. Missouri State University will have seven representatives in seven different events participating at the West preliminaries in Austin, Texas, May 28-30.
Highlighting the MSU contingent are a pair of junior Missouri Valley Conference champions Oarabile Babolayi and Robiann Broomfield. Babolayi qualified in both the 100-meter hurdles (13.57) and 400-meter hurdles (59.37) after winning the MVC title in the 400-meter event last weekend in Normal, Ill. Broomfield was The Valley long jump champion and qualified for the NCAA meet in both the long jump (6.14m) and triple jump (12.68m). She finished 22nd at last year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship in the triple jump.
Sophomore All-MVC performer Marissa Kurtimah will represent the maroon and white in both the 100-meter dash (11.42) and 200-meter dash (23.51) events in Austin, while junior all-conference selection Holly Pattie-Belleli (13.67) will join Babolayi in the 100-meter hurdle prelims.
Shavonne Husbands will make her third NCAA appearance in as many seasons with an 11.67 qualifying mark in the 100-meter dash, while fellow junior Shani Adams will join Babolayi in the 400-meter hurdles (59.74) field. The squad's only senior qualifier, Chelsey Borders, will join Kurtimah, Pattie-Belleli and Husbands in the 4x100-meter relay (45.07), an event in which MSU ranks as the 13th-best qualifier among the teams going to Austin.
"We are returning to familiar territory with veteran athletes," said MSU head coach Ron Boyce. "We are excited about our chances for performing well and hopefully getting an opportunity to advance to the national finals in Oregon."
Four of Missouri State's NCAA qualifiers have previous experience at the national level with three-time national participants Broomfield, Husbands, Babolayi leading the way along with Borders who also ran on the 4x100 relay team with Husbands last season as part of a quartet that finished 20th at the national meet.
In addition to the 4x100-meter relay team that enters the regional meet in the 13th position among all West prelim teams, MSU has three other entries ranked in the top 20. Kurtimah has the 16th-best entry time in the 100-meter dash, Broomfield is in the 18th position in the long jump and 20th in the triple jump.
Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each of the two preliminary championships competition sites (May 28-30) to the final championships. The East region is being held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., and the West region at the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.
