SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. - Missouri State finished sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Club at Porto Cima on Tuesday.
The Bears shot a 16-over 304 in the final round to finish at 53-over 917 for the tournament.
Junior Joey Johnson fired a 1-over 73 on the final day to lead the Bears at the 7,036-yard, par-72 Jack-Nicklaus-designed course. Johnson posted one birdie and two bogeys on the day to finish at 8-over 224 for the tournament in 12th place, on the way to being named to the all-MVC team. The all-conference honor is the second of Johnson's career and first since his freshman season.
"This was a frustrating week for us as far as our play went," Missouri State head coach Neal Stafford said. "Hopefully this will serve as a learning experience going forward. We have to continue to improve our focus over the entire tournament."
Freshman Brad Carpenter carded a 4-over 76 with a birdie of the par-4 10th hole to complete a strong first year at MSU with a 14-over 230 for the week, grabbing a share of 24th place.
Senior Mark Karlsen closed his collegiate career shooting a 77 for a 20-over 236. He birdied both the par-4 seventh and par-3 16th to tie for 32nd place.
Juniors Brik Brauburger and Mitch Mather recorded rounds of 78 and 80, respectively. Mather birdied both 13 and 14 to help him finish 13-over-par for the tournament in 23rd place. Brauburger birdied the first, 14th and 16th holes to finish 26-over for the championship in 39th overall.
"We had some moments this year of showing the capability of piecing together a full event," Stafford said. "With that, we have a solid returning nucleus along with an exciting signing class."
Wichita State claimed its eighth straight title with a three-round even-par 864, with Louis Cohen Boyer earning medalist honors at 5-under 211.
Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois tied for second in the team standings at 37-over 901, while Evansville and Bradley rounded out the top five at 903 and 917, respectively.
Loyola was four strokes behind the Bears at 57-over 921. Drake (59-over 923) and Illinois State (65-over 929 were ninth and 10th.
