LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Junior Brik Brauburger posted the Missouri State men's golf team's best round of the day - a 1-over-par 73 - to lead the Bears in the final round at the UALR First Tee Collegiate Tuesday at Chenal Country Club.
As a team, the Bears fired a 299 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 886, 20 strokes off the pace in sixth place on the par-72 Bear Den Mountain Course. Brauburger finished 6-over 222 to tie for 29th with classmate Joey Johnson. Ozark, Mo., native Johnson posted a 2-over 74 Tuesday.
Fellow junior Mitch Mather, coming off of an opening round 67 Monday, closed the tournament with a 76 to finish tied for 10th at 1-over 217, marking the best 54-hole tournament score of the season by a single stroke, and his best career finish. Senior Mark Karlsen carded a 76 of his own on his last 18 to finish the event tied for 55th at 12-over 228.
Freshman Brad Carpenter closed his week with an 81 for 17-over 233, while classmate John Fuchs, playing as an individual, shot 77. The Springfield native finished tied for 82nd on the strength of his best round of the tournament.
Tulsa, which entered the final round with a two-stroke lead, fired a team score of 291 to finish in first place at 866, one stroke ahead of runner-up Memphis. The Tigers combined for a team score of 286 in the final round - the low team score on Tuesday.
ULM moved up two spots with a team score of 292 on Tuesday to finish in third place at 876. Following UALR (877), McNeese State (885) rounded out the top five.
Tulsa's Matt Mabrey fired a 4-under 68 in Tuesday's final round to move up five spots and earn medalist honors. Mabrey finished the event at 6-under par, one shot ahead of runners up Pep Angles of UCA and Greg Smail of ULM. Colton Staggs, the leader after 36 holes, carded a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish in fourth place at 4-under par.
Missouri State returns to action at the Red Wolves Intercollegiate in Jonesboro, Ark., Saturday and Sunday at RidgePointe Country Club.
