Kenzie Williams and
Liza Fruendt became the first MSU teammates to score 20 points in a game this season, and
Tyonna Snow added a season-high 19 points as the Lady Bears tallied a season-best 90 points in a 90-78 victory at Illinois State Sunday afternoon.
Williams led Missouri State (12-13, 9-5 Missouri Valley Conference) with 25 points in the team's fourth consecutive victory, while Fruendt went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and 7-for-9 overall for her 21 points. Snow added seven rebounds, five assists and six steals, moving up to seventh in MSU history in career steals. Williams, meanwhile, jumped to 21st in career scoring, passing her aunt, Cindy Castillon, for that position.
Missouri State overcame six turnovers in its first 11 possessions with a hot shooting start, going 9-of-13 overall and 5-for-6 from 3-point range in the first 11 minutes. Trailing 13-10, the Lady Bears ripped off a 13-2 run to lead 23-15 with 9:25 remaining, as Fruendt needed just 125 seconds to score the final 11 points of the run.
The Redbirds (1-25, 1-14) twice cut MSU's lead to two points, but the Lady Bears pushed their lead to 32-23 at the 4:35 mark on a 3-point play by Williams, and went ahead by double digits on a
NiJay Gaines 3-pointer for 37-27.
The Lady Bears opened the second half on a 6-0 run to lead 45-29 on Snow's layup, and increased the advantage to 20 points on Fruendt's fourth trey of the game for 58-38 with 12:22 to play.
Missouri State led by at least 14 points until the Redbirds hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull to 73-62 with 5:10 to play, but Williams answered with a jumper and then hit a 3-pointer for a 78-64 advantage with 3:35 left.
Fruendt followed with a pair of free throws for 80-64, but the Redbirds fired back and hit a trey with 1:35 left to pull to 82-72, the closest margin since halftime.
The Redbirds briefly cut the deficit to single digits, but Williams hit eight foul shots in the final minute and finished 11-for-11 in the game. MSU went 22-for-33 from the line as a team, while ISU went 20-for-23 as a total of 31 fouls were called in the second half.
Missouri State matched its best shooting percentage of the season by making half of its 58 field goal attempts, including 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. Illinois State finished at .441 (26-59) from the floor, and the Lady Bears won the rebounding battle, 37-33.
Missouri State returns to JQH Arena to face UNI at 7 p.m. Friday and Drake at 2 p.m. Sunday for its final home weekend of the season.
