MVC Release
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri State junior Marissa Kurtimah was selected Missouri Valley Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (Dec. 8). Kurtimah receives this honor for the first time in her career.
The Bears went to the campus of Kansas University this weekend to compete in their first meet of the season at the Bob Timmons Challenge, where Kurtimah finished second in the 200-meter dash clocking in a time of 24.17 seconds. Her time beat a previous personal best mark of 25.78 that she recorded last season. Kansas' Zainab Sanni won the event with a time of 23.81 seconds.
Kurtimah nearly broke the school record of 7.48 seconds in the 60-meter dash as she crossed the finish line with a time of 7.50 seconds behind Sanni and Sydney Conley from Kansas. Prior to the race, Kurtimah's personal best in the event was recorded at the MVC championships last season after finishing 15th in the preliminaries with a time of 7.74.
Both her 200-meter time and 60-meter time rank nationally as the second-best and tied for sixth-best, respectively, after one week of competition.
The Bears will now take a significant break in the schedule before continuing their 2015-16 indoor track and field season at the Missouri Invitational in Columbia on Friday, Jan. 15.
