DES MOINES, Iowa - The Missouri State men's soccer team (3-4-2, 1-1 MVC) fell 2-1, to home standing Drake (7-2, 2-0 MVC) here Saturday in its second MVC match of the season.
The tough MSU defense was able to protect the net until the 32nd minute of the match, when Drake's James Grunert, found himself in the middle of the box with an open look over the MSU defense, putting the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Drake was able to find another opening in the 62nd minute, giving Drake the 2-0 advantage.
It wasn't until the 88th minute of the match that MSU was able to answer. Junior Jack Griffin blasted the ball off of an assist from Nick Burtenshaw through the back of the net to pull MSU within 2-1 in the final two minutes of the match. But the Bears would not mount another rally and fell to 1-1 in Valley play after their first conference road challenge.
Four Bears got shots off in Saturday night's match. Griffin, scored the lone goal in the match for the Bears, tallying his second goal on the season and four in his career. Teammate Jake Buckle took two shot attempts in the match, giving him 19 shots on the season thus far, making him the most active freshman on the squad. Nick Burtenshaw and Scott Midgley also took shots for the Bears.
The Bears return home Tuesday to take on Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. The MSU men's basketball team will be hosting a pregame pizza party for the first 500 students through the gate. Recording artists, Luna Jamboree, will host a pregame concert beginning at 5:30 p.m. MSU will continue conference play on Saturday (Oct. 10) against Loyola, with kickoff scheduled at 7 p.m. Admission for both matches is free for MSU students with a valid I.D. and children ages 12 and under. Admission for MSU faculty and staff is $2 and tickets for all other adults are $5.
