SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (9-5-1, 3-2-0) saw its chances of a regular season title end with a 2-0 defeat to visiting Drake (7-8-2, 4-0-2) in the home finale at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Bears still can secure the two-seed and a bye into the MVC Tournament semifinals despite the Bulldogs clinching the regular season crown with today's result.
"Congratulations to Drake, they battled very hard and took advantage of their opportunities," said head coach Rob Brewer. "I thought our effort and performance were good. We forced their keeper to make some good saves. We had ample opportunities, but just couldn't cash them in. We will try to regroup and have a positive outcome on Thursday and try to get that second seed."
Drake capitalized on their first corner kick of the match. In the 36th minute, a header to the back post put the Bears in a 1-0 hole heading to half time.
In the 58th minute, the Bulldogs struck again. A turnover near midfield was quickly transitioned to run behind the Bears' defense for a chip-in goal and a 2-0 deficit for MSU.
Missouri State fired 14 shots in the match and caused the Drake keeper to make eight saves in the match. Junior Millie Kingsbury led MSU with three shots taken, two on net.
The Bears defense held Drake to just three shots on goal in the match.
Missouri State will close out the regular season on Thursday at Evansville. A Bears' win in the 6:00 p.m. tilt versus the Purple Aces would secure the second seed in the MVC Tournament held in Evansville on November 6-8.
