SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Sophomore Brooke Zimmerman notched her fourth career game-winning goal as the Missouri State women's soccer team (9-4-1, 3-1-0) defeated visiting Illinois State (5-8-2, 2-2-0) by a 1-0 score at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium on Saturday evening. All four of Zimmerman's game-winners have come at Allison South.
"They (Illinois State) have been the flagship program for our league for the last four or five years," said head coach Rob Brewer. "Tonight we competed. We had our moments, but it took eight seconds of brilliant soccer and a goal. Brooke (Zimmerman) above all else is a competitor and I am happy that she is winning games for us."
A muddled midfield kept both offenses in check in the first half as the Redbirds had the only three shots through 45 minutes.
The Bears offense came out on a mission to open the second half. Just three minutes in, Zimmerman was on both ends of a give and go with senior Cassie Le. Zimmerman lasered a shot into the left side of the net for the go-ahead goal, her second of the season.
In the 71st minute, Zimmerman looked to add an insurance tally. Her shot from 25 yards ricocheted off the upper left post and out keeping the Bears' advantage at 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Perry made five saves including a couple of tips over the net on sneaky accurate shots. She held her third clean sheet of the season in the win.
Zimmerman accounted for all four of the Bears' shots. The Redbirds racked up 11 shots in a losing effort.
Missouri State will face Drake next Saturday (Oct. 24) at 2:00 p.m. in the final home match of the season. Eight MSU seniors will be recognized pre-game as part of the annual Senior Day festivities. The Bears close out the regular season at Evansville on Oct. 29.
