Sept. 4, 2014 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Molly Brewer was selected as this week's Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Thursday (Sept. 4). The Springfield native holds a cumulative 4.00 grade point average and is undecided upon a major. A 2013 MVC Scholar-Athlete first teamer, Brewer adds her second league award of the week after being named MVC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Brewer scored a pair of goals and added an assist to catapult to a tie atop of the league with six points on the season. For her effort, she was named to Holiday Inn City Center Tulsa Invitational all-tournament team.
Over the weekend, she scored her first two goals of the season and added to her team-best assist total. On Friday, she put the Bears up midway through the first half at Tulsa on an unassisted goal.
Then on Sunday, she continued her dominance over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. She again put the Bears in front with another first half tally. Then in the 84th minute with MSU trailing, she served in an accurate corner that found its way into the net to tie the match. It was Brewer's eighth career assist and fourth against ORU.
On the weekend, she scored two goals on five shots and four of the five shots were on target. Her two goals and two assists are tied for third in each category.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
The Bears return home to Allison South on Sunday, September 7 for a 1:00 p.m. match against Arkansas State. That match will mark the beginning of five out of six games on the MSU slate to be played at home. Sunday's match will be televised on MC22 on tape-delay and a free clinic will follow that match for youth grades K-8.
