WATERLOO, Iowa - The Missouri State women's soccer team (7-9-2) avenged Thursday night's loss with a dominant second half performance in a 2-0 win at UNI (7-9-3) on Sunday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament. Seniors
Kelsey Fouch and
Molly Huber tallied goals in historic fashion to continue the Bears' season.
"We played an excellent first half with the wind at their back," said head coach Rob Brewer. "The five days we spent here in Iowa with no distractions, was a great opportunity to build team chemistry and that growth was evident today. It was great to get the shutout and a road win."
After a statistically uneventful first half, it didn't take long for the Bears to make an impact to begin the second half. Kelsey Fouch scored just 37 seconds into the second half, the fastest goal following halftime in program history. She fired a shot from about 20 yards out to the far post. It was the first goal of Fouch's career and her seventh point of the season from the back line.
Ten minutes later it was Huber's turn to make history. She scored her 13th goal of the season to cushion the Bears' advantage to 2-0. Her goal broke a 17-year old school record, original set by Jamie Hautzinger in 1997.
The two goals were all MSU needed as the defense clamped down on the Panthers to the tune of just five total shots. Bears' goalkeeper Jessica Perry needed to make just one save to record the first postseason shutout of her MSU career. It was the first postseason shutout by the Bears since a 0-0 draw against Creighton in 2008.
MSU advances to the semifinals of the MVC Women's Soccer Championship and will face host and top-seeded Illinois State on Friday, November 7, at 6:00 p.m. in Normal, Ill. The winner will advance to Sunday's finals with an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament at stake.
