CHOUDRANT, La. - The Missouri State men's golf team finished sixth at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Country Club on Tuesday.
The Bears closed with a 3-over-par 291 for a three-round 880. Junior Brik Brauburger paced MSU, firing a 2-under 70 in his final round to place 13th overall, after carding a 69 in the second round Monday. Brauburger finished at 217 for the week with five birdies Tuesday.
"I was proud of the way we finished the tournament today," said Missouri State head coach Neal Stafford. "Brik played very well, making several birdies again today. Following his play yesterday afternoon with another under-par round today shows what he is capable of doing."
Classmate Joey Johnson finished tied for 20th at 221 on the par-72, 7,105-yard course. He notched four birdies on the day, but was not able to match his 73-71 start, ending with a final-round 77.
Senior Mark Karlsen shot a 3-over 75 with a pair of birdies and 13 pars on his final round to finish tied for 27th at 222.
Junior Mitch Mather turned in a third-round even-par 72 for the Bears, which included four birdies, to tie for 36th.
Freshman Brad Carpenter tied his low round for the fall with a 74 to finish tied for 49th at 232.
North Texas claimed the team title at 24-under par over Stephen F. Austin (853), which shot 11-under. The Mean Green (840) fired a 12-under 276 on Tuesday to ensure the victory. North Texas' Juan Munoz was the individual medalist, winning the crown in a playoff against Victor Lange of host Louisiana Tech. Lange closed with a 10-under 62 to force the playoff, while Munoz shot 69. The pair tied at 203.
The Bulldogs were third, going 7-under par in the final round to finish with 857. Central Arkansas was fourth at 864 and Southern Miss was fifth at 872. Louisiana Monroe (885) placed seventh, UALR (893) eighth, New Orleans (900) ninth and Nicholls State (912) rounded out the field in 10th.
The Bears' spring portion of the schedule opens at the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz., Feb. 20-22.
"Most of the guys have a pretty clear picture of what they need to work on over the next couple months and we'll be looking forward to making those improvements," Stafford said.
