ERIE, Colo. - The Missouri State women's golf team shook off its first-round jitters and steadily improved on the second day of play Friday (May 11) at the NCAA West Regional. After finishing Thursday 23rd out of 24 teams, the Bears jumped up two spots on the leaderboard past Oregon State and Northern Colorado and are one stroke behind Kennesaw State.
No. 22 seed Missouri State didn't allow the chilly and overcast conditions at Colorado National Golf Club to become a factor. The Bears fired a 19-over (307) and three of the five individuals bettered their first-round scores.
Senior All-MVC selection Kelsey Welber made the biggest improvement, recording a seven-stroke difference from day two to day one. She carded the second-best score for the Bears on Friday with a 5-over-77 and moved up nine spots in the individual rankings.
Through 36 holes, senior Catherine Dolan and junior Hermine Greyling have led the charge for Missouri State. Both are tied for 71st at +10. Dolan, a 2012 All-MVC selection, carded a 5-over-par during the second round and was tied for second among the Bears' finishers on the day. Greyling notched the best score of Friday's action with a 3-over-75. She moved up 22 spots from 93rd on the individual leaderboard.
Rounding out the MSU golfers were freshman Megan Thompson, who carded a 77, and junior Emma Clegg, who shot an 80.
Dolan, Thompson and Greyling registered two birdies apiece on Friday, while Welber logged one.
Of the 126 participants selected for the West Regional, the top eight teams and two individuals will advance to the NCAA Championships, played May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. At the top of the leaderboard with 18 holes to go is 40th-ranked Stanford, seventh-ranked North Carolina, and in third is the sixth-ranked team in the nation, North Carolina.
After two rounds, North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell leads the field at 5-under par (70-69=139).
The Bears will wrap up their second-ever NCAA postseason appearance on Saturday with a 1:55 CT start time.
