NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. -- The Missouri State men's golf team stormed out of the gates for the 2011-12 season opener with authority, finishing second in the team standings at the Fairway Club invitational here, while junior Daily Young (Springfield, Mo.) won top individual honors.
Coach Neal Stafford's Bears (902) finished eight strokes behind tourney host and overall champion Nebraska (894), while Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton (903), Oral Roberts (906) and South Dakota State (908) rounded out the top five.
Daily led wire-to-wire after an impressive opening-round 67 put him ahead of the 69-man field early. He followed that effort with a second-round 74 on Monday afternoon before finishing with a 72 today. It was Young's first collegiate event title in just his 13th tournament at MSU. His three-round 213 was two strokes better than Nebraska's Manuel Lavin and three clear of teammate Jordan McLaurin (Sr., Ironton, Mo.) who shot 74-70-72--216.
Will Hogan (234), who was an NCAA Regional qualifier last season, tied for 27th, Nick Langley (240) tied for 46th, Eric Straub (243) tied for 55th, and Mark Karlsen (252) was 64th to round out the Missouri State finishers.
The Bears stay busy next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 19-20) when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., for the Kansas Invitational in their second of five fall meets.
