Track and Field Bears Earn Valley Academic Honors

The Missouri Valley Conference announced the 2010-11 academic awards Monday, Aug. 22. More than 1,500 athletes were selected to the 2010-11 MVC Honor Roll according to the league office. Forty-nine student-athletes received the league's highest academic achievement, the MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award.

Bears' track and field standout Terry Phillips earned the prestigious MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award. The President's Council Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.8 cumulative grade point average, participation in athletics for a minimum of two years, and the student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation.

Phillips, a senior distance-runner out of Kansas City, Mo., was the 2010 MVC Indoor champion in the 3,000-meter run. Her time of 9:35.40 ranked third in Missouri State history in the event. Phillips was also named to the All-MVC team in 2010, as well as being a MVC Scholar Athlete. Phillips is receiving her degree in chemistry.

Other track and field Bears earning MVC academic honors were Kelsey McCowen and Kimsue Grant. McCowen and Grant were among 400 other Valley student-athletes garnering the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award for 2010-11. To qualify for the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award student-athletes must obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for the previous two semesters, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and participate in athletics. McCowen, a junior from Lafayette High, is majoring in middle school education, while Grant, a sophomore from Washington Lee High, is majoring in computer sciences. McCowen and Grant were also named to the MVC Honor Roll squad.

Rounding out the Bears' academic honors for track and field in the Valley were Katie Mulloy, Katelynn Geier, Jessica Dantin, Ariel Butzine, Jordan Bond, and Sydney Peavy, all being named to the MVC Honor Roll. To be named to the MVC Honor Roll student-athletes must have a recorded minimum grade point average of 3.2 for a specified term, must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours during the fall and be a member of an athletics team.
