Overtime Goal Thwarts Bears Title Hopes

Oct. 27, 2011

Box Score

The Missouri State women's soccer team (11-4-2, 4-1-1) dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Evansville (3-11-4, 2-4-0) on Thursday night. The loss gives the Bears a third-straight runner-up finish in the regular season and snaps a team-record 11-match unbeaten streak.

The Bears came out firing on all cylinders, knowing a win would give them their first MVC regular season crown. MSU rattled off 12 first half shots, but UE goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison made five saves to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.

The second half began and it was the same story for the Bears. Shot after shot, 14 more in the second half, were unsuccessful. But Missouri State's Jessica Teahan was equally as stingy. Teahan made five saves in regulation and the two teams went to overtime, 0-0.

With both teams having something at stake, it didn't take long for the overtime winner. Just 26 seconds into the first overtime, the Purple Aces earned a free kick just outside the top of the box. UE's Stephanie Thompson drilled a rocket into the upper corner to lift Evansville past the Bears and into the MVC Tournament.

Adrianne Kalogerou had a team-high five of the Bears' 26 shots. Michelle Sommer and Bethany Smith added four shots each. Tiffany Laughlin and Jennifer Hamlin each tallied three shots on goal for MSU.

Missouri State will next host the State Farm MVC Women's Soccer Tournament. The Bears will await the winner of the Creighton vs. UNI match to be played on Sunday.

The MVC tournament consists of two semifinal matches will take place on Friday, November 4 and a championship match on Sunday, November 6. Illinois State will play the winner of Evansville and Drake at 3:30 p.m. and the Bears will play at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
