Scores were low Monday (Apr. 7) on the first day of the ASU Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark., and the Missouri State men's golf team came out in 13th place after shooting 285-288--573, three under par, over the first 36 holes. The top 10 teams are in double digits under par entering Tuesday's final round, with New Orleans taking the lead after scorching Sage Meadows Golf Club with a 24-under-par 274-278--552, two better than Austin Peay and three in front of Illinois State.
Senior Damaso Carrera was low for the Bears after shooting 70-69--139, five under par, good for a tie for 16th place. Sophomore Jay McBride is 37th at 68-74--142, with freshman Jack Courington next at 61st after shooting 73-73--146. Senior John Cronly sits in 70th with 75-72--147 and sophomore Scott Glenn is 90th at 74-78--152. Sophomore Ryan Weinhaus, playing as an individual and unable to count in the team scoring, is tied for 61st after shooting 72-74--146. A four-way logjam at the top of the leaderboard includes Grant Leaver and Luke Sherrod of Austin Peay, Tyler Hitchcock of South Florida and Tyler Thompson of Arkansas State, all at nine-under 135.
The rest of the standings in the 16-team field is as follows: South Florida (557), fourth; Arkansas State (558), fifth; Louisiana-Monroe (559), sixth; Southern Illinois and Louisiana-Lafayette (562), tied for seventh; Oral Roberts (563), ninth; Arkansas-Little Rock (565), 10th; DePaul and Northern Iowa (570), tied for 11th; the Bears (573), 13th; Central Arkansas (575), 14th; Stephen F. Austin (578), 15th; and Jacksonville State (579), 16th.
Tuesday's final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
