Four Arkansas pitchers combined for four hits and 11 strikeouts as the ninth-ranked Razorbacks (26-10) blanked the Missouri State (19-14) baseball team by a 2-0 score in non-conference action Tuesday at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.
Arkansas broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when leadoff man Jake Dugger plated Tim Smalling with a ground out to second. Smalling led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to third when catcher Dallas Hord slipped on a pickoff attempt, causing the ball to skip down the right field line.
The Razorbacks made the lead 2-0 in the sixth when catcher Jeff Nutt drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Casey Coon’s bouncing single through the left side.
The Bears’ offense struggled all night, mustering only bunt singles from Ben Woodbury and Kyle Paul and base hits from Nolan Keane and Kyle Paul, ending a streak of 48 consecutive games with an extra base hit.
Starter Tim Clubb (4-1) took the tough-luck loss, pitching another solid seven innings of four hits and two runs, one earned. Pat Doyle threw a scoreless eighth as the Bears’ pitchers matched UA’s four hit performance.
MSU got a two-out single from Paul in the ninth but Travis Hill struck out Matt Lawson to end the game.
Missouri State heads to Dallas Baptist this weekend for a two-game set. Friday’s first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
